Charlie Adam has warned Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United about their upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign using Celtic under Ange Postecoglou.
The BBC Sport pundit has warned Newcastle United that fans do not win football matches, noting how Celtic failed to do much of note in the UEFA Champions League last season.
The former Rangers midfielder has pointed out how Celtic were dire in Europe’s premier club competition under Ange Postecoglou, who is now in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
Celtic dire in UEFA Champions League last season
Celtic played out a 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk away from home in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League last season.
The match was held on September 14, 2022.
Celtic played out a 1-1 draw with Ukrainian club Shakhtar at Celtic Park in the Champions League in October 2022.
The Hoops ended the campaign at the bottom of their group with just two points from six matches.
Newcastle are in UEFA Champions League action this season.
The Premier League club will take on AC Milan away from home at San Siro in Group F on Tuesday evening.
Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund are the other two teams in the group.
Newcastle United sent Celtic warning
Former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Newcastle cannot bank on their supporters to get them through matches against elite teams in Europe.
Adam said: “Supporters don’t win you a match.”
Noting Celtic’s failure last season, the BBC Sport pundit said: “Everybody said, ‘Celtic will beat Shakhtar Donetsk’, and the bubble just burst after about 10 minutes.
“The supporters don’t win you football matches.”
